Cities, Cinema, and Literature, A Roundtable

April 12, 2015

jinyucheng-posterThe “Imagining the Future” Workshop Series will this time feature renowned author Jin Yucheng, whose widely acclaimed novel Blossoms (繁花)  has garnered almost every one of China’s literary awards after its publication in late 2012. The event will be hosted and moderated by Shaoyi Sun and Shi Chuan at the Shanghai Theatre Academy. Jin will be in dialogue with Chen Jianhua, a Jiaotong University professor and a decade-long researcher on early modern Chinese literature and cinema.

It has been confirmed that, following on from The Grandmaster, filmmaker Wong Kar-Wai has shifted his plans for his next project with an adaptation of Jin Yucheng’s Blossoms. The book provides a vivid image of the daily life of ordinary Shanghai people and focuses on around one hundred characters over two time-lines: from the 1960s to the mid-1970s, and from the 1980s to the start of the 21st century.

Here is a quote from Jin: “Shanghai is a pyramid, and only its peak has ever stood in the spotlight. The depictions and writings about this Shanghai involve only characters who reside on the Bund or frequent the Paramount, the once notorious high-society ballroom. But there exists a base at this pyramid that has always been left in the dark. This is the Shanghai of the common man and woman.”

Event Location: The Fourth Floor of the Library Building, Shanghai Theatre Academy; No. 630, Huashan Road, Jin’an District, Shanghai.
Time: April 20, 2015 (Monday), 2-4:30pm.
